Description:

UK house standout J Fader returns to Panama Red with a full EP follow-up to his remix for Antonio Caballero’s previous “Next Up” single. Fader gets to work right away with a jumping, San Francisco house influenced track “Jazz Thing (Ain’t Misbehavin)”, the jazzy piano and vocal snippet nicked from Ella’s standard, “Ain’t Misbehavin’” brings the Harlem Renaissance right in to the 21st Century and out on the dance floor, making it sound relevant and fun for times as uncertain as they were way back in the Thirties. Chicago legend Greg Norwood opts for a tougher, leaner version on his remix. Big loping bass lines and wicked congas replace the jazziness of the original, but Norwood still wisely retains the vocal snippet for a sweet breakdown.

The second original, “Sassigo Disco”, is a chunky bass line house cut with sweeping filters and punchy horns in the classic deep house tradition. The vibe is soulful and bright, perfect for any crowd. Emerging producer Arek Zagdan adds a techy flourish to his remix of the track for a deeper, heady side of swinging Chicago house via Warsaw.

“Bounce For Me” closes out the release on a high note with a third solid original on an already stacked EP. The horn accents keep the jazz feel intact throughout but the bass line and subtle melodies give this a hidden b-side bonus kind of feel, one to have in the crate for that special late night moment and keep the trainspotters guessing. Label owner Antonio Caballero saves the best for last with a roughed-up remix of “Bounce For Me” that packs a funky wallop with a huge wobbling garage bass line and filtered horn line hooks. It’s a perfect ending to another must-have house music collection from Panama Red Records.

Winter Mix Featured Artist – Platinumb

Posted on Tuesday, November 15, 2011 in Live Mixes, Local Artists, Mixes, Studio Mixes

Artist Overview

Based out of the great state of Arkansas, Platinumb aka Chauncy Neumann has been on the forefront of the midsouth’s EDM movement for almost a decade.
As one of the pioneer’s of the Electro / Progressive scene, Platinumb infuses a dynamic and innovative taste in sound with the knowledge and experience of being a classically trained musician to bring forth a forward thinking musical experience that stands out amongst the masses.

Editor Review

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Chauncy for over a decade now. We use to spin records together way back in “the day” when he would show up with a rolling suit case and I would show up with an old laptop bag in which we carried our vinyl. Since then I’ve had the privilege of watching this artist grow year after year. His technique is something that should be taught in school and his theory is rock solid. Chauncy has the ability to go further than just reading a crowd, he has the power to make the crowd like what he wants them to like. As far as underrated acts go, Platinumb would rank at the top in the MidSouth Dance scene. He’s had production work sold on the largest dance site on the planet and he’s played alongside some of the biggest acts in the world. It’s our honor to be able to feature him in our first local artist mix review.

Below you’ll find links to several of Platinumb’s mixes. All of them are stellar, all of them are different, and none of them get old. Grab a copy today and watch your local artist lineups. You’ll be seeing a lot more of this guy in 2012.

Looking for LOCAL mixes!

Posted on Tuesday, November 1, 2011 in General, Live Mixes, Mixes

Since we are in our off season we have some time to spend getting our blog moving again.  To do this we are going to enlist the help of the local DJ community and instead of focusing on tracks for the winter, we’re going to turn our attention towards mixes.  So you say, that’s awesome what do I need to do?  It’s pretty simple.

  1. Send an email to promotions@balancemusic.net with a link to the mix.  No matter if you upload it to a file hosting site so we can download it and post it, or if you link us to your soundcloud account or whatever.  The only rule is that the mix must be freely downloadable by all.
  2. Be sure to include your name, moniker, track list, short bio (please take a few moments  and put some thought into this, we will not correct your grammar or spelling, if you sound like a 3rd grader, it’ll stay that way), any social media links or email addresses you want listed and… a good, large, picture.

We’ll listen to the mix and give our thoughts on it, then post it for the world to grab.

It’d be awesome to get enough of these to do one a week through January!

So, get to mixing.  Wonder who will be first…

Lila D. – Shiver EP

Posted on Tuesday, September 13, 2011 in New Release, Promo

ARTIST: Lila D.
TITLE: Shiver EP
LABEL: Blaq
RELEASE DATE: September 15th, 2011

Lila D. – Shiver EP feat. Romy Kerr
w/ remixes by Jubilee, Itzone, Lao, Jack’s son

Description:

Valeria is 50% of Signal Deluxe, and co-owner of Blaq Records, for our 60th release she took some time off her usual duties at SD studios and worked some magic on her own with some nice collaborations from her dear friend and singer Romy Kerr
3 original tracks that oscillate between downtempo after-hours galore and some deep beats for some experimental dance floors, not following the trends out there she makes beats that are deep, obscure and introspective.

For the remix duties she brought together some of her close and dear friends:
Jubilee dropping some downtempo house deepness straight outta’ DC. Jubilee has become a close member of our family, we love this remix it has that underground magic to it. Watch for more amazing music from this producer coming via Blaq.

Itzone goes all freaky and old school with his remix, reminding us of the old school electro beats that we all love at Blaq.

Lao prints his ultra dope original broken beat signature for a funky yet primitive ride, he is one producer we are fully in love with.

Jack’s son of Abolipop fame drops a gem representing the city of Guadalajara, watch out for Jack’s son’s upcoming full length album on Blaq in the coming months, definitely one of our favorite producers in Mexico.

This EP contains many shades and moods for different tastes mostly evolving around broken deep dark introspective beats and textures, hope you enjoy.

D. Gookin – Spiral Style

Posted on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 in New Artist, New Release, Promo

Artist: D. Gookin
Track: Spiral Style
Label: Moodgadget Records
Release Date: 8-23-11

Description:

New Haven beatsmith and solo artist D. Gookin, a.k.a. Mike Birnbaum, is on a mission. Think of it as retaliation against a recession both economic and emotional. While his peers delve ever deeper into moodiness and sonic murk, Gookin flips life’s unsavory bits into maxed-out, genuinely uplifting music. Combining the adventurousness of modern electronic innovators like Tobacco and Daedelus with the playfulness of ’90s pop usurpers like Soul Coughing and Len, his sound is as propulsive as it is melodic, as freewheeling as it is meticulously orchestrated, and as blown-out bright as it is endlessly detailed.

Raised by journalists in the wooded suburbs of Maryland, Gookin found his way to music at a young age. He began piano at 5, encouraged by his family, and later an unhealthy obsession with Nirvana’s In Utero left him fiending for guitar lessons. By 9, he’d assembled a drum set out of paint cans and toy tambourines, and after a year of bootleg clanging, his folks surprised him with a legitimate kit. He soon became a beat-driven tyrant—that rare drummer who fancied himself leader of the band, ordering his kid friends to learn instruments so they could back him.

By the time Gookin left to pursue music production at the Hartt School of Music, he’d founded and dismantled at least one jam-thrash nü-funk outfit, and nurtured a deep love for IDM artists like Aphex Twin, Luke Vibert and Squarepusher, plus collagists like DJ Shadow. At school, he befriended jazz-addled glitch crew Landau Orchestra and became their drummer, gleaning the ins and outs of laptop production along the way. He took to it instantly and began to “just loop and listen,” the process he employs to this day. Hence, D. Gookin was born.

His first self-released record—2009′s LP How 2 Deal and 2008′s EP When You’re Lonely, Everybody’s a Celebrity(Moodgadget)—were steeped in ’80s electro and Italo Disco and yet oddly melancholic, like hearing someone else’s dance party through a wall, or a pop tune playing from the bottom of a swimming pool. After contributing to Passion Pit’s full-length breakthrough Manners, Gookin self-released 2010′s From Here the Wall of Undoing EP, where he took a different tack. He pushed his drums and vocals to the forefront, adopting a psychedelic, rock-driven, maximalist approach à la Dan Deacon. Meanwhile, he developed his kinetic live show to match, both locally and on the road with Mux Mool.
